Team Cherry marked the end of a monumental year with a holiday blog post on December 15th, revealing that Hollow Knight: Silksong has sold over seven million copies in the three months since its September launch. This figure excludes the "millions more" players accessing the game via Xbox Game Pass, underscoring the incredible success of the sequel across all platforms.

An Indie Success, Over 7 Million Strong
Silksong's performance has is incredible, but when your game crashes all the digital storefronts at launch you know you've got a hit on your hands. At the launch price of $20, the seven million sales represent over $140 million in revenue before platform cuts, cementing it as one of the biggest indie launches ever. Team Cherry summed it up in their blog post like this:
"That’s over seven million of you who’ve purchased the game, alongside millions more playing on Xbox Game Pass! It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected,"
Sea of Sorrow and an Upgraded Knight in 2026
And there is even more to come in 2026. Sea of Sorrow, a free expansion for all Silksong owners, is described as "nautically themed," and promises "new areas, bosses, tools, and more," extending Hornet's adventures across and beneath "salt-stricken seas." The teaser vignette hints at Pharloom Bay elements cut from the base game, including shadowy underwater ruins and boss silhouettes, fueling speculation of aquatic combat and exploration.

We're also getting a free upgrade for the original Hollow Knight in 2026. Nintendo Switch 2 owners can upgrade for free to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, featuring enhancements drawn from Silksong: like higher resolutions, high frame-rate modes, and new graphical effects. But all other platforms get updates too: with bug fixes, widescreen aspect ratio support (16:10, 21:9), and more. PC players can access beta builds for these features now via Steam/GOG!.
"Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further," - Team Cherry.
Silksong was one of my favorite games of the year, and it's great to see Team Cherry find so much success with it, they deserve it all. I'm also very excited that our adventures with Hornet don't have to come to an end, hopefully we'll get several new areas to explore in the years to come.
If you're not one of the 7 million players who already has it, you can pick up Silksong on Steam, Playstation, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox Game Pass and get ready for Sea of Sorrow. Good luck, and have fun.
