Heretic + Hexen Surprise Release Shakes Up QuakeCon 2025

QuakeCon 2025 delivered a welcome surprise today with the shadow drop of Heretic + Hexen, a definitive re-release of the beloved '90s FPS classics, now available across multiple platforms. Announced live during the event, this enhanced collection from Nightdive Studios and id Software brings the dark fantasy shooters into the modern era with new content and features, captivating both classic fans and new players.

A Legacy Revived

Originally crafted by Raven Software on a modified Doom engine, Heretic (1994) and Hexen (1995) introduced groundbreaking mechanics like inventory systems, vertical aiming, and distinct character classes, shaping the FPS genre alongside icons like Doom and Quake. This re-release bundles Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, now enhanced with 4K resolution, 120 FPS, and a whole collection of accessibility options. Available today on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC (including Game Pass), it’s a nostalgic plunge into shadowy realms.

New Content to Explore

The highlight? Two all-new episodes: Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur, crafted in collaboration with id Software. These additions bring the totals to 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch maps, packed with retextured levels and cut content from the Vault. Cross-platform multiplayer (up to 16 players) and local split-screen modes (up to 8) bring fresh co-op and PvP action, while mod support via an in-game browser lets the community go wild and add even more as time goes by.

A Lost Gem Has a Chance to Shine

The annual surprise retro releases that we have received at QuakeCon over the last few years have really done a great job of making the id classics from the 90's playable on the latest systems. Even if we may have expected the release this year, that doesn't make it any less exciting for the fans.
