Halo: Campaign Evolved Drops Today: Master Chief Lands on PlayStation After 25 Years

Halo: Campaign Evolved is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Halo Studios rebuilt Combat Evolved's campaign from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 for the franchise's 25th anniversary, and for the first time Master Chief is a first-party Xbox icon you can play on PlayStation. Premium Edition owners have been in since July 23. Today is the full launch, including day-one Game Pass (Ultimate and PC Game Pass) and the $49.99 Standard Edition. Early critic consensus is Generally Favorable: Metascore sits around 81 across platforms, with Xbox leading at 84, PS5 at 81, and PC at 77. Steam early-access owners currently rate it Mostly Positive (about 70% of roughly 3,450 reviews).

A Full Rebuild, Not Another Coat of Paint

This is not the 2011 Anniversary remaster layered on the old engine. Campaign Evolved was built in Unreal Engine 5 with redesigned levels, new cinematics, re-recorded dialogue from the original voice cast, and a remastered soundtrack. Halo Studios kept enough of the original Blam-era physics and AI behavior that the gunfight still feels like Combat Evolved, while importing systems fans learned from later games.

Competitive multiplayer is intentionally absent. This is a campaign product: solo, 2-player split-screen, and 4-player online co-op with full crossplay and cross-progression across PS5, Xbox, and PC.

Critical Reception: Strong Remake, Real Caveats

Reviews landed with Premium early access and settled in the low 80s overall. Metacritic shows roughly 80% positive and 20% mixed critic scores with zero negative buckets so far. Platform split matters: Xbox is the comfort zone (84), PS5 is solid (81), PC trails (77).

VGC: 100 -- "Halo Studios' Unreal Engine 5-powered upgrade of the original Halo campaign elevates the original with sublime visuals, smart tweaks, and broad respect for the gameplay feel, design, and aesthetic that makes this game so beloved."

Push Square: 90 -- "Faithfully remaking and expanding one of the best shooters of all time... bonus missions that feel like they've always been there... Welcome back, Chief."

Daily Star: 100 -- "Wonderful new sheen... the gun game underneath is still addictive, brilliant shooter fun... Playstation gamers who stuck to that ecosystem finally get a true great."

Creative Bloq: 80 -- "A UE5 remake layered with new content and reasons to replay... some technical problems hold it back."

DualShockers: 65 -- "Looks better than ever... PS5-specific headaches and bad performance issues are currently holding it back in major ways," plus friction from required Microsoft/PSN account linking.

Steam's Mostly Positive (70% of ~3,450) is cooler than the critic high scores, which is the honest early-access picture: login/account glue, Premium upgrade hiccups (community manager Brian Jarrard said those should now be resolved), and platform-specific performance complaints, especially on base PS5. Cortana presentation changes also stirred the usual franchise discourse. None of that erases the core loop praise. It does mean day-one Standard and Game Pass players should expect a patch cadence, not a flawless museum piece.

From a developer's chair, the interesting part is the product definition. Halo Studios used a campaign remake as the first Unreal Engine 5 Halo, a clean on-ramp for PlayStation owners who never owned an Xbox, and a statement that exclusivity is no longer the brand strategy. Missing multiplayer will annoy some; focusing the budget on missions, skulls, and co-op is the more coherent 2026 call for this specific package.

Get Back to the Ring

Halo: Campaign Evolved - Warthog's are back

If you never played Combat Evolved, this is the easiest entry the series has ever had: modern controls, accessibility options, co-op with friends on any box, and a $50 price (or Game Pass) instead of a $70 live-service pitch. If you know every Library hallway by heart, METEORITE, the expanded arsenal, and 42 skulls are the reasons to re-run Alpha Halo instead of dusting off the Master Chief Collection again.
