Gamescom 2026: What to Expect From ONL, Xbox's Packed Floor, and a Sold-Out Cologne

Gamescom is almost here, and this year already feels bigger than the usual late-August pile-on. The show runs from August 26–30 in Cologne Germany, but what we're all waiting for is Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live for all the latest trailers and announcements.

Two things set 2026 apart before a single trailer drops: exhibition space is completely sold out for the first time, and the big platforms are already treating the week like a second summer showcase window rather than just another expo to show their already announced games.

The Year Gamescom Steals the Show?

Summer 2026 already ran a full showcase circuit: Summer Game Fest, State of Play, Xbox Games Showcase, and a meaty Nintendo Direct. Gamescom is usually where those shows' leftovers get hands-on demos and Europe-facing logistics. This year the organizers are not acting like leftovers are the story.

Gamescome show runners say every available exhibition area is booked after last year's expansion still failed to absorb demand. They are already sketching 2027 expansion concepts. New names joining the floor include Konami, Tencent Games, Embark Studios, Level Infinite, sitting beside a already-deep roster: Nintendo, Xbox, Capcom, SEGA, CD PROJEKT RED, Electronic Arts, Bandai Namco, Ubisoft, Focus Entertainment, Deep Silver, HoYoverse, Krafton, NetEase, Google Play, The LEGO Group, and more.

For a site that covers this stuff from a developer seat, that signal matters more than any single trailer. Floor space is the boring industrial metric that tells you publishers still believe physical discovery (and the livestream halo around it) is worth the booth build and travel costs.

Opening Night Live: August 25

The Witcher III - Songs of the Past

ONL is still the appointment viewing for people who will never set foot in the EU. Here are some of the confirmed announcements :

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past: CD PROJEKT RED's next big Witcher 3 expansion gets a proper premiere window at ONL. Target window is 2027 on PS5, Xbox, and PC. Treat anything beyond "first proper look" as rumor until Keighley rolls tape.
  • METRO 2039: Expected ONL presence for 4A Games and Deep Silver's next Moscow campaign. Also targeting 2027.

Organizers are also leaning on the gamescom awesome indies show (now developed further with IGN) and the European premiere of Gamescom GDQ (Games Done Quick landing its own stage Friday–Sunday, with a charity push for "Gaming for Democracy"). Those are not AAA keynotes, but they are the kind of side stages that make Cologne feel like more than a trailer factory.

Xbox's Floor Plan Is Packed

Xbox - Gears of War E-Day

The Xbox booth sits in Hall 7, A-0.61, with 25 upcoming games and 140 stations. Booth hours run Thursday–Sunday and Live booth broadcasts start 4:00 p.m. CEST on August 26 and 27 on YouTube and Twitch.

How to Watch Along

We'll be tuning in to Opening Night Live for all the announcements and then checking in on the other streams to catch gameplay of the best looking games. You can find the livestreams on Youtube or Twitch, or you can just come back here and watch in the video embed below.

If you only have one evening free, take ONL. If you only have one afternoon free, take the Xbox floor stream. Everything else is bonus.

What We're Most Excited About

1. Songs of the Past - Getting a Witcher 3 DLC this long after release only works if it respects the finished story. Hopefully we'll get a clear look at what this expansion is really about.

2. METRO 2039 - 4A's track record on atmosphere is outstanding, but we need to see real gameplay to be confident on this coming out anytime next year.

3. Gears E-Day - I'm really excited to get a closer look at the campaign for E-Day. Thankfully, if they are putting the campaign in players hands six weeks out, they must be pretty confident.

4. Castlevania: Belmont's Curse - This is one of the 2026 titles I am most excited for. Here's hoping it has a great showing and isn't lost in the noise of all the other games at the show.

5. A sold-out floor - It has been a rough time in the games industry for the last several years. Hopefully the fact that the show is booked up will translate into record numbers of players and set us back on a better course.
