Nintendo Direct September 2025: All the Biggest Announcements and News
Today's Nintendo Direct delivered a 60-minute showcase packed with exciting reveals for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, timed just before the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. on September 13. From new games to remasters and DLC, the presentation highlighted a robust lineup for 2025 and beyond. Read along for our recap of the key announcements.
Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary Celebrations
Shigeru Miyamoto kicked off the Direct with tributes to the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. as well as information on celebrations happening this year at the Nintendo Museum in Kyoto and Nintendo's sponsorship of the upcoming Kyoto Marathon in 2026. We were then treated to an update on the next animated movie from Nintendo, titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie! Following up on the massive success of The Super Mario Bros Movie it looks like Nintendo is planning to take us into space in the next installment. You can check out the reveal trailer below.
To commemorate the Anniversary, and prepare everyone for next year's movie, Nintendo announced that Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will launch, with enhanced visuals, for Nintendo Switch on October 2, 2025. The collection will be available in a physical edition that includes both games, or sold separately on the eShop. These are absolutely two of the best 3D Mario games ever made, so this is a going to be a great package for Switch owners.
Mario Tennis Fever
A new entry in the Mario sports series, Mario Tennis Fever, was revealed for Nintendo Switch 2, promising fast-paced tennis action with Mario and friends. It features enhanced multiplayer modes, as well as new Fever Rackets that can be mixed and matched with characters to great interesting combos. Mario Tennis Fever is slated for a Feb. 12th 2026 release.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book
This intriguing new title, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, introduces a story-driven adventure for Yoshi on Nintendo Switch 2. Players will unravel a magical narrative through vibrant, and almost unbearably cute, platforming. Set to launch in Spring of 2026, this looks like a great cozy platformer for the new year.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
The Mario love didn't stop there, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is also getting a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with new multiplayer-focused content, including expanded co-op modes and new levels. This edition is set to launch in Spring 2026, and at this time it's unclear if there will be an upgrade option for owners of the original Switch title. We'll keep you updated as we get more info.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Release Date
This one is kind-of a 'good news', 'strange news' situation. The good news is that we finally have a release date for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond of Dec. 4th. But the strange news is that Samus was riding a motorcycle!?
Honestly, this trailer feels strange in a few ways. One is obviously the motorcycle reveal, but equally strange to me is the lack of any additional information. This is a highly anticipated game that has been in development for many years, to drop a trailer like this, that raises so many questions, and then not provide any additional details is odd. Especially when you realize that Kirby: Air Riders is going to get 2 stand-alone directs to explain what is essentially a one button racing game?
Something seems off to me. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid and Metroid Prime 4 ends up being the fantastic return for Samus that we have all been hoping for.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A Update and Mega Dimension DLC
We got another look at the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A in this new trailer. As well as an announcement for paid DLC, entitled Mega Dimension, that will be coming to the game after launch. This will likely be the biggest game for Nintendo over the Holidays so it will be interesting to see how many new Switch 2 systems are sold with it when it launches on October 16th.
Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush DLC
Speaking of DLC, Donkey Kong Bananza is getting in on the act as well with DK Island & Emerald Rush, This is an interesting release, and one that I'm excited to check out. It not only adds DK Island as a new level to smash in, but Emerald Rush seems to be a rogue-like time trial mode that can be played on the new Island Map and on at least some of the levels from the base game.
I think it's a cool idea to turn the existing levels into a repeatable game mode that will likely keep speed runners and completionists busy for quite a while. This DLC is available today! So go out and see what kind of high score you can smash with DK.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment made an appearance in the Direct and, to my eyes, this trailer looked better than some of the previous footage. The gameplay felt smoother and it looks like it's shaping up to be a good entry for the series. Check it out for yourself and see what you think, but I'm sure this will be one played at our house after it launches on Nov. 5th.
Virtual Boy joining Nintendo Classics?
Are you sitting down? If not, you'll need to be to when you play the Virtual Boy through Nintendo Classics! Honestly, this one was not on my bingo card this year. For Nintendo to bring back the Virtual Boy, and even include the option to buy a Switch stand to make it work in 3D is pretty awesome. Crazy, but awesome.
While I probably won't be picking up the stand myself, I am happy to see that there is a cardboard option that looks similar to the Nintendo Labo releases we received for Switch.
Long Live the Virtual Boy!
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave
The final reveal in the Direct was a new Fire Emblem game, titled Fortune’s Weave. It looks like a great follow up to the series that stays true to its tactical RPG gameplay, engaging characters, and well told narrative. It’s set for a 2026 release on Switch 2, so I'm sure we will learn more next year.
Capcom Heavy Hitters Coming to Switch and Switch 2
Capcom brought out the big guns, and flashlights, to announce that not only will Resident Evil Requiem be coming to Nintendo Switch 2, but Resident Evil 7 and 8 will also be released for Switch 2 on the same day, Feb 27th 2026!
The trailer for Resident Evil Requiem was interesting because we not only got new footage of the game but we also saw some of the same footage that was released at Gamecom this Summer. I'm sure the guys at Digital Foundry will tear it all apart soon to see how the Switch 2 version stacks up against PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Capcom wasn't done though, it also showed off a new trailer for Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, which looks like an awesome upgrade on the previous two games. I think this game has the chance to be the breakout hit for this series; it looks great, it has all the great monsters from the Monster Hunter series, and it ties in that Pokémon capture and battle mechanic that drives the kids crazy.
Hopefully we'll continue to see more of this one as we lead up to launch on March 13th, 2026.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade
The Final Fantasy VII Remake continues to look incredible, and the latest trailer is no exception. We also now have a release date, Switch 2 players will finally be able to get their hands on this one on Jan. 22, 2026.
Wow, that was a lot! There was even more in the full direct that would couldn't cover here today. If you want to see if all for yourself you can watch the full presentation on Nintendo’s YouTube channel.
Overall, I think Nintendo delivered a good mix of first-party and third-party games for Switch and Switch 2 owners over the next 6 months. Keep checking back with us at GameMinr.com for all the latest on these games as they get closer to launch.
Have a great one.
