Hades II Preview: A Heroic Sequel Starts its Voyage on Switch

As the successor to one of the most acclaimed indie games of all time, Hades II from Supergiant Games has been dazzling early access players on PC since 2024. Now, with a full release drawing near, the rogue-like action RPG is making waves with its Nintendo console exclusivity and welcome physical launch strategy. Come with us as we dive into what makes Hades II a must-watch title for Switch and Switch 2 owners, blending mythological mayhem with refined gameplay that builds on its predecessor's legacy.

Hades II - Gameplay and Combat

Melinoë: Warrior Princess

Hades II places players in the role of Melinoë, the Princess of the Underworld and a witch torn between worlds. Armed with an arsenal of boons from Olympian gods and other mythological entities, you'll battle through procedurally generated runs filled with intense combat, strategic builds, and a deep narrative. All along the way you'll be able to marvel at Supergiant's signature hand-drawn art style, as it shines brighter than ever, with vibrant hellscapes and divine encounters that feel both familiar and fresh.

The story expands the Hades universe, exploring themes of family, fate, and rebellion against the Titan Chronos, all delivered through sharp dialogue and voice acting that rivals the original's charm. Early impressions from the PC version highlight improved pacing, more weapon variety, and deeper relationship mechanics with gods like Zeus and Hestia, making each run feel rewarding and utterly replayable.

A Few Welcome Tricks

What sets Hades II's Nintendo launch apart is its console exclusivity, ensuring Switch and Switch 2 players get an optimized experience tailored for handheld and docked play. Launching physically on a single cartridge compatible with both the original Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, the game offers seamless portability without needing separate versions. This "same cart" approach is great for players and something I hope we see more of, as it avoids some of the confusion around what version to buy that we have seen with other titles.

Hades II - Combat

Hades II is also priced competitively at $29.99 on the eShop, with digital versions launching on September 25, and the physical edition available on November 20th for $49.99. Nintendo's timed console exclusivity also comes with some nice graphical options, with 120 fps at 1080p in docked mode and 60 fps at 1080p in portable mode for Switch 2 (720p 60 fps in both modes on Switch). Supergiant also promises cross-save functionality between platforms for those who started on PC, bridging the gap for dedicated fans.

Almost Time to Take a Trip Through the Underworld

Overall, Hades II looks poised to eclipse its predecessor, refining the roguelike formula with more emotional storytelling and fluid combat. Supergiant has been working hard in Early Access to make their first official sequel something worth of their fans passion, and it sounds like they have nailed it.

Hades II is our team's first-ever sequel, and we've been giving it everything we've got for more than four and a half years. Since May of 2024, we've been developing in Early Access, taking feedback from our player community to try and fully realize this game's potential. The result is the biggest game we've ever made, and one we hope you'll find to be a worthy successor to its namesake. - Supergiant

If you're craving a blend of addictive gameplay, Greek mythology, and endless replayability you need to set a date with Princess Melinoë, because Hades II could very well be Supergiant's crowning achievement.
