This Hand-Drawn Legend of Zelda Fan Project Reimagines the Landmark Adventure
I’ve been a Legend of Zelda fan since the very beginning. As one of the first games I played on the NES, it holds a special place in my heart. I can still recall standing with my dad at a Nintendo kiosk in our local Wal-Mart, waiting for our turn to try this strange, golden-cartridge adventure that was nothing like the Super Mario Bros. we had at home. Since then, I’ve played and loved every entry in the series, so it’s no surprise I’m a sucker for anything Zelda. But even with my bias, I can confidently say that this is something truly special.
Youtuber Vasge has been pouring his heart into a project that reimagines the first Legend of Zelda’s iconic first dungeon (Level-1) in a breathtaking hand-drawn art style. He has been chronicling his efforts in a Devlog series, and the latest update, Devlog #3, shows off stunning progress, with an incredible style that perfectly recreates that classic level. The hand-drawn visuals bring Link’s adventure to life in a way that feels like a lost animated film from the ‘80s, with every sword swing and dungeon corridor dripping with charm.

Watching the latest video is like being transported back to those summer afternoons in 1986, exploring Hyrule’s secrets for the first time. The attention to detail in the art, from enemy sprites to the dungeon’s eerie atmosphere, is remarkable, and it’s clear Vasge has a deep love for the source material. No matter how far along this project goes, it’s a must-see for any Zelda fan.
