Absolum Launches Today: Call Your Friends for Some Hand-Drawn Roguelite Beat 'Em Up Action!

It's time, Absolum is officially here! Developed by the trio of Supamonks, Guard Crush Games (masters of beat 'em up combat from Streets of Rage 4), and published by Dotemu, this roguelite beat 'em up revives the golden age of arcade brawlers while injecting unpredictable roguelite elements for infinite replay value. Set in a world fractured by a magical cataclysm, you'll lead a band of rebels against Sun King Azra's oppressive regime, exploring lush environments like the mines of Grandery and forests of Jaroba, all rendered in stunning, fluid animations that feel like a high-quality animated film come to life.

A Fantasy Brawler That Never Grows Old

At its core, Absolum delivers fast-paced, combo-heavy combat where you chain attacks, dodge spells, and unleash magical counters against hordes of barbaric beasts and formidable bosses. There are four unique characters to choose from: Galandra the sword-wielding necromancer, Karl the brute-force dwarf with his enchanted weapon Beste, Cider the agile assassin with an extendable arm, or Brome the levitating frog mage. Each character has their own distinct move-sets that shine in solo play or two-player co-op for that classic arcade action.

Absolum - Combat Gameplay

Absolum's roguelite progression keeps things fresh and playing through each run, especially in co-op, feels like diving into an action-heavy D&D night! You can build and customize your character in each run with the randomized buffs, and you'll never quite know what is coming next thanks to the randomized level layouts. In true roguelike fashion, you'll learn and improve with each run so that the next time might be the one where you finally finish your quest.

Beautiful Chaos

Absolum - Dark Magic

The presentation of Absolum is fantastic, both in its visuals and soundtrack. The hand-drawn characters, backgrounds, and animations make it feel like you're playing an awesome Saturday morning cartoon, that I wish I could have watched as a kid. And the soundtrack amps up the experience at every turn thanks to the excellent composition by legends like Gareth Coker (Ori series), Yuka Kitamura (Dark Souls), and Mick Gordon (Doom), and its performance by a live orchestra.

If our preview from a couple weeks ago got you hyped (and it should, we called it a "must-play" love letter to the genre with no cons in sight), now's the time to dive in. A free demo is still available on Steam for a taste, featuring two heroes, unlockables, and a boss tease, perfect if you're on the fence. Head to the official site at playabsolum.com for more info, or revisit our full preview here for deeper insights.
