Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition Launches on Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S with Free Upgrades

It looks like the free updates are going to keep coming. A couple weeks ago we got a great upgrade for Red Dead Redemption, last week saw an upgrade for Skyrim, that unfortunately wasn't so great, and now we have a surprise release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S!

You can check out the official launch trailer below to see it in action:

Excellent Upgrade to a Tactical RPG Masterpiece

Divinity: Original Sin 2 follows heroes vying for godhood in the fantasy world of Rivellon. On its initial release it was praised for its branching narratives, co-op multiplayer, and environmental combat effects that allow players to combine elements like fire and oil for explosive results. It was Larian's greatest RPG ever, until they turned the world upside down with Baldur's Gate 3 a few years later, and it's still a joy to play, especially with the Definitive Edition upgrades.

All of these next-gen ports provide the usual enhanced performance with faster load times, higher resolutions and better frame rates, but it's the Switch 2 upgrade that delivers the biggest improvements. With resolutions up to 1080p docked on Switch 2, and a stable 60fps (cut to 30fps in portable mode), compared to the original Switch port's lower resolution and 30fps cap. These updates really make it viable to tackle Original Sin 2's massive 40-60+ hour campaigns on the go with Nintendo's new handheld.

A Perfect Time to Dive in, Especially on Switch 2

If you already own Divinity: Original Sin 2 on Switch, PS4, or Xbox One, you get this upgrade free via an upgrade pack! But new players shouldn't feel left out because there are currently deep discounts on digital storefronts, $14.99 on PS5 (75% off), $17.49 on Xbox, and $24.99 (50%) on the Nintendo eShop. This new edition also arrives on the heels of Larian's Game Awards reveal of a new Divinity title, and is a great way to get caught up on the story while we wait for the next installment.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Switch 2 Exploration Gameplay

This release is also fueling speculation that we might see a Baldur's Gate 3 release for Switch 2 sometime in 2026. With Divinity running this well on Switch 2 it seems like Baldur's Gate 3 could make the jump, but we'll have to wait and see what happens. Either way, these upgrades to Divinity are more than enough to keep us busy through the Holidays.
